Edge computing is transforming the way data is being handled, processed, and delivered from millions of devices around the world and Gartner research shows the proportion of enterprise-generated data processed outside a 'traditional' centralized data center or cloud will leap from 10 percent in 2018 to 75 percent by 2025.

Edge Computing is a key enabler for supporting low latency, high bandwidth and highly distributed applications delivered over 5G networks. By virtue of being closer to the user equipment (UE), Edge Computing helps achieve efficient service delivery through reduced load on the transport network. It also allows applications that run on UEs to be offloaded to the Edge leading to lower battery consumption. Further, UEs can tap into Edge for scalable real-time machine intelligence. Edge Computing has led to the creation of a distributed cloud layer which coupled with virtualized and cloud native network functions has opened up opportunities for network disaggregation, providing cost savings to operators. In addition, Edge Computing offers new opportunities with Exposure APIs. It is because of these reasons Edge Computing is getting serious attention across the board - Telco operators, Enterprise service providers, Private 5G service providers, Open source projects, Hyperscalers and Research test beds.

Motivated by this progress and to further advance discussions, this one-day IEEE 5G summit is bringing together leading experts from telecom service providers, cable service providers, mobile service providers, system OEMs, software service providers, silicon vendors, open source projects as well as leading researchers from academia to share their perspectives on opportunities and challenges for Edge Computing in the era of 5G, AI/ML, Open RAN and Hyperscalers. This summit is being co-sponsored by IEEE Communications Society and IEEE Princeton Central Jersey Section. It will provide a unique forum for practitioners and researchers to discuss recent developments, the evolving landscape of Edge Computing technologies, deployment use cases in various network and cloud scenarios and business benefits. Architects, Developers, Engineers, Testers, and Business Leaders as well as Students and Researchers from academia will surely find it useful to listen and have an opportunity to network with experts and innovators from industry and academia.
